Specialty Rotating Machinery — Sealing Overview

Beyond pumps and vessels, plants run many special rotating machines: high-speed dispersers, bottom-entry choppers and vacuum processing units, lump breakers, screw conveyors and rotary valves, horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and tunnelling rigs, pulp pressure screens, food machines such as ice-cream freezers and marmalade cookers, and heavy machines such as extruders, calenders, rotary kilns, gas roasters and homogenisers.

Each machine is sealed according to what is at the shaft. Where liquid surrounds the seal, a pump-type or double seal works. Where dust or powder is at the shaft, the seal must run dry and be purged. Where drilling mud or stock is present, slurry-type seals with hard faces and springs outside the product are needed. Some machines, including extruders, kilns and homogenisers, use sealing designs specific to the machine maker, so Gipfel works from the drawing and operating data.

Key Sealing Challenges

  • Variety: one plant can have very different sealing problems on neighbouring machines; each needs its own duty data.
  • Abrasion: drilling mud, pigments and stock need hard faces and a clean flush or barrier.
  • Dust: bulk-solids machines need dry-running seals or purged designs.
  • Hygiene: food machines need cleanable seals and FDA-compliant materials, with a quench where sugar sets.

How is a seal chosen for a special machine?

Start from what is at the shaft: liquid calls for a pump-type or double seal; powder or dust for a dry-running seal with purge; drilling mud or stock for a slurry seal with hard faces. Machines with maker-specific sealing, such as extruders and kilns, are engineered from the drawing.

Fault Diagnosis Example

Symptom: Screw conveyor end seals leak powder and the shaft is grooved under the packing.
├── Incorrect Response: "Repack more often."
  ├── Diagnostic Evidence Required:
│ ├── Is the conveyor end plate aligned with the shaft bearings?
│ ├── Is there a purge at the shaft end?
│ └── Can the shaft be removed easily, or is a split seal needed?
  └── Engineered Solution:
├── Fit a dry-running or split seal on a new sleeve.
├── Add a filtered air or nitrogen purge.
└── Correct end-plate and bearing alignment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Gipfel supply seals for HDD machines?

Yes. Gipfel makes multi-spring and wave-spring semi-cartridge seals for HDD machines, including a design for slurry service. Send the rig make and model or the old seal.

What information is needed for an unusual machine?

The machine drawing or the existing seal, shaft size and speed, what is at the shaft (liquid, paste, powder or gas), pressure or vacuum, temperature, and how often the machine is cleaned or stopped.
